general appearance
Oralie is a blossoming young woman. She has quickly developed a feminine figure in recent years. Outside of Hogwarts, you will not find the girl wearing anything except stilettos. She takes after her mother in this fashion choice. The uniform restrictions at Hogwarts are a great plight upon her. She takes after her mother and elder brother in coloring. She rarely wears her hair up, preferring long, sleek and straight styling for her locks.

Undeniably a lady, Oralie is always elegant, poised and polite. She has a grace about her--part of this is a natural grace and part has been crafted by lessons and chiding from her mother, nannies, and etiquette mistresses.

skills
ALCHEMY - Eternelle is the family business--a place of potionology and alchemy experimentation. As such, Oralie was exposed to Alchemy long before many of her fellow students. Though she is only in her first year of taking the class at Hogwarts, she has been participating in alchemy experiments with her brothers for years now.

ARITHMANCY - Arithmancy is not like Divination. She cannot abide Divination. There is a precision to Arithmancy that pleases her. She feels very in control when faced with numbers and calculations. That suits her very well.

AURA READING - This skill she can take little credit for. It was an ability she was born with.

BALLET - Her mother would disown her if she couldn't dance.  Trained since she was little more than a toddler, ballet has been as much of a constant in her life as potioneering.

CHARMS - Spells and nature, this girl's a snake. Oralie radiates self-confidence and an aura of mystery, and her insightful observations, original ideas and formidable logic enable her to push change through with sheer willpower and force of personality.

DAUNTLESS - The girl is utterly immune to intimidation. She may question herself on occasion, but you will never make her do so.

GRACE - Ballerina. What more needs to be said?

INTUITIVE - Oralie has a tendency to see through your lies to tell you her own.

NEUTRALITY - The Slughorns are known to do what suits them. Oralie is much the same. She believes that they can always hold to their place in society. The flow of politics can always be managed with enough coin and charm.

POISE - Ladylike. That is of utmost importance to her mother. She must be a lady. Trained in etiquette as a child, Oralie knows all the rules of high society. She knows when to keep them--and when she can bend them a bit for her own fun.

POTIONS - She is a Slughorn after all.
weaknesses
CLOSED-OFF - Oralie has almost no true friends. She finds it very difficult to trust others. She believes that everyone is out for themselves. Her brothers have encouraged her distrust of others.

FAMILY - Grey is not always an easy shade to be in a world where people tend to really love black and white.

IGNORES INJUSTICE - Oralie just wants to be treated well herself--and to avoid having to see others suffer. She is actually quite sympathetic to any she actively observes suffering, even if she is inclined to avoid embedding herself in the misfortune of others. The witch actively avoids seeing the worst parts of the world.

MORALLY AMBIGUOUS - The Slughorns have their own self-serving ethical code. Really any wrong can be justified if it was done for a reason they deem worthwhile. She was raised to believe herself superior to others. She was raised to use others for her own gain. Anything for family. Anything for Eternelle.

PERFECTIONIST - This really should come as no surprise. She has a prima ballerina for a mother...and a longstanding tradition of Slughorn potionology excellence. She is extremely motivated to succeed in all things, no matter what she has to do to ensure that.

PREJUDICE - Raised very rich and wholly immersed in wixen culture, Oralie knows little about the muggle world. She is deeply discomforted by the presence of the poor. She hates to see poverty. It makes her very uncomfortable. The witch does not hate muggleborns. She does not understand them, just as she does not understand people who are different from her in sexuality. She cannot wrap her head around the idea that a person could be a gender other than the one shown by their body.
positive traits
AMBITIOUS - ARTICULATE - CUNNING - CULTURED - ELOQUENT - INTUITIVE - PERSISTENT - POISED - OBSERVANT - NEAT - STRONG-WILLED - WELL PUT TOGETHER

Oralie has a brilliant mind. She is intelligent and opportunistic. Strong willed and persistent, the witch can sometimes be reserved, drawing away and into her own shell if disturbed or provoked. She is a tidal force of perplexing emotion, and can be stubborn, compliant, furious, and docile, all in the same hour. She is deeply intuitive, and if she says she doesn’t feel right about someone, it pays to take notice. She won’t know the reason, but she will probably be proved right sooner or later. Similarly, her unerring instinct will tell her at once if someone is to be trusted. This is not about being judgmental--it’s about instincts and feelings. Oralie is quite sympathetic and sensitive to her family, particularly her brothers.
negative traits
AMBITCHIOUS - FEARS FAILURE - FINICKY - JEALOUSMATERIALISTIC - MORALLY FLEXIBLE - SELF-CENTERED - SENSITIVE - SPOILED - SNARKY- SNOBBY

The witch has always been the baby of the family. She is used to being pampered, spoiled and doted upon. The only girl her little slice of the Slughorns--she has kept her brothers wrapped around her finger since she was wee thing. She does not like losing their attention.

character history
Oralie is the last of the children born to Kristofer Slughorn and Isidore Slughorn née Burke. Life with her brothers came down to this simple concept: Eternelle before the world, the family before Eternelle, and Oralie before the family. She was always protected, always loved, and she grew to trust her brothers over all others, even their parents. Oralie loved Brenton best of all, because he would read to her. She was fond of Ian, too, but he was far more boisterous. She took after the first born of the family, finding her place among the books and like her great grand uncle in front of a cauldron. The girl did so love it, though, when Ian would tell her about the day she had been born.

Though she has only a few memories of the years when Ian was at home with her and Brenton had already gone off to school. They are fond. Her brother always cared for her, played with her, and never let her come to harm. Her childhood was a good one--a happy one. She was always sheltered from the world, from the bad and the darkness. This could have made her naive, but she was well exposed to the histories and to literature, even in her youth. She knew there was evil and wrong-doing in the world, even if she was not touched by it.

The girl did not like it when her brothers were away at school. Oralie was quite sure that Brenton's graduation from Hogwarts was the happiest day of her life, because it meant he could play with her every day and never have to leave. Reality required him to go out from the house more than she liked, but it was still much better than him being at Hogwarts. Those years were good, so far as the girl could tell. There could have been things going on in the world outside their home, but they did not matter to her. She had her nanny. She had her brothers. She had their library. It was a good life.

Soon though, it was time for Oralie, herself, to go off to Hogwarts. The girl's sorting was swift. Like so many of the Slughorns before her, she was sorted into Slytherin. She had no doubt she would follow this tradition. She belonged with her family. It was very sad to her that Uncle Horace was no longer leading the Slytherin House and teaching potions. Adjusting to being at school was a bit difficult for the witch. She missed Brenton terribly and wrote him nearly every day that first month. Her letters to him were much nicer than the ones she sent to her mother, which quite often included pleas to be able to return home.

But eventually, Oralie came to adjust to the life at Hogwarts. She made 'friends'. She found her place within her house--and most importantly, she held the the Slughorn tradition of maintaining neutrality. None would call her a purist, but nor would she be accused of being a muggleborn sympathizer. She is very skilled at voiding any strong prejudicial language, playing every encounter off as a lady would. She defers to her elders when it suits her. She gives an opinion when it suits her. Her actions are always calculated. Logic and reason guide her.

When the Death Eaters revolted, the Slughorns held their breath. They'd had light members in the past, but they had never directly gotten involved. They were purebloods, they were successful, they had never turned their backs on a fellow pureblood in need, as long as the particular individual had not harmed their own. They did not join in the rebellion, but they also did not voice disapproval. They easily conceded to the changed regime, knowing which way the wind was blowing. It wasn't that the Slughorns had never been purists. Oralie's parents were all certainly a bit more prejudiced than Uncle Horace, but they weren't fond of violence. Least of all of violence used upon them. They cared about knowledge and power. Their blood and their wealth and their title and their status was, however, more than enough to ensure their maintained position in society. They were no fools. Slughorns always kept their heads above water.

Her fourth school year was quite frightening for Oralie. Pure as her blood was, witnessing the horrors at the dance and being held at school still left the girl shaken. She dared not write the truth of her feelings in her letters to her brothers, but there were hints there for them. They had to know that something was not right. The disappearances of the muggleborns unnerved her---and treatment the muggleborns now receive appalls her. They are people, perhaps not exactly the same as pureblood wizards, but surely not deserving of these horrors. But what can she do? She is but a young woman--and she must always protect herself and her family first. She will not speak out against the purists. She will play chameleon among their ranks enough to blend in. She does not seek to stand out in this.

It was a great mark of pride for the witch to be chosen as Slytherin prefect. She had so hoped to take after Brenton in this...She did so try to be a good example for others. She was delighted to find her badge in her supplies letter for fifth year. She was even more pleased and surprised when in her sixth year supplies letter contained both the badges that marked her as prefect and Quidditch captain. Oralie is most hopeful that next year, she will find the Head Girl pin in that Hogwarts envelope. Time will tell--

Oralie is careful in this new world, just as she was careful in the old. Family comes first. It always will. Her brothers she loves above all others--and she is certain she always will. This is why she must hate the woman Brenton is to marry. She is losing him and she wishes so badly to stop it. There is only one day she dreads more than his wedding day--and that is her own. She wishes to be a Slughorn forever and will always be in her heart, no matter who she is given to. She fears her betrothal is imminent since her mother was wed at seventeen. Many tears, secretly, have been shed over this.

family history
Kristofer Slughorn was a man uninterested in marriage until he witnessed Isidore Burke on the stage at Avalon. A ballet prodigy, Isidore had been homeschooled instead of attending Hogwarts. Dance came before everything else---and that commitment paid off. By age twenty-one, she had become a soloist at Avalon. Determined to court her, despite being twenty-two years her elder, Kristofer attended a show every week for three months. He offered her a bouquet after each of these performances.

Love grew between them during a courtship of just shy of a year. Isidore was showered with gifts and luxuries beyond what she had known growing up as an Burke. While her family was not poor by any means, they were not of the social status and standing of the Slughorns. It was the difference of being part of the 1% and part of the 1% of the 1%. Isidore married up, certainly--but none would speak against her now. She has been a loyal and devoted wife to Kristofer for just shy of thirty years. The pair are a staple of wixen high society in the United Kingdom, and globally.

Children were expected when the pair wed--as was leaving her position at the ballet. She danced up until the day before her wedding. It was hard to leave Avalon. She loved it...and would return to it in time, not as a dancer, but as Director.

Isidore gave her husband an heir and a spare before she sought permission to return to work. The boys were at private primary academies before she joined Kristofer at Eternelle. Several years, Isidore worked with her husband--not in the brewing of potions, but in the business of the organization. She ascended to the position of Chief Financial Officer.

Her pregnancy with Oralie came as quite the surprise. The pair had believed themselves to be taking the necessary precautions to prevent pregnancy, but a forgotten contraceptive charm led to them conceiving their little girl. Isidore left Eternelle when she gave birth to Oralie and stayed home with her daughter for a number of years. When it came time for Oralie to go off to Hogwarts, Isidore found her way back to Avalon. Her experience as CFO for Eternelle and years as a ballerina prepared her to become the Director of the ballet company.

Q: How did the Slughorn family fortune survive the Durant years?
A: Quite simply, in fact. They have kept heavily diversified financial holdings for decades. They have investments in both muggle and magical businesses within the United Kingdom--but also outside of it. Durant could only do so much damage to them---and truly, he did very little to harm their financial status. They were not Death Eaters. They were simply purebloods.

Q: What is Eternelle?
A: Eternelle is the family business. Founded in 1892 by Tiriel Slughorn, Eternelle has long been a pantheon for alchemic and potionology experimentation. Research and development of new potions and alchemic substances is the focus of the business. There are some potions laboratories in the company faculties used for mass production of magical pharmaceuticals. The company owns countless patents and formulas. It keeps a great deal of its discoveries as proprietary knowledge.
