[break][break]
[attr="class","cbody"]More than anything, he was bored, and that was not something that Rodolphus did all that well with. He couldn’t remember a time in his life where he had been bored for an extended period of time. It had just never happened. Back in his youth, there were plenty of ways for him to keep himself occupied. Witches, invention, torture—whatever he wanted. There was nothing that he couldn’t have, but that had all changed when the Dark Lord had fallen.
[break][break]
But even when he had been in Azkaban, it hadn’t been boredom that he had felt. That had been a different kind of suffering, admittedly. It had not been easy to endure, but it hadn’t been as hard for him as it had for others. Dementors took and took, and he didn’t have all that much happiness that could be taken away. After all, he wasn’t sure if he really knew what happiness even was. Not really.
[break][break]
No, he couldn’t remember a time in his life when he had ever felt like this. Boredom was easy to resolve, normally. A witch in his bed, a prisoner in his dungeon, and his needs were sated. It was as simple as that. But now it wasn’t that easy. He had Andromeda in his bed, or anywhere else that he wanted her, but that was all that he had. Rodolphus had nothing to fill his days, while Andromeda was at the Ministry working. It was backwards and it made no sense to him whatsoever. He did not expect her to spend every day at home, obviously. He had never known a meek wife and he would have been bored with a housewife within the week, but… he didn’t like being home.
[break][break]
He didn’t like having nothing to do while she worked all day long. Originally, he had thought that he couldn’t work in a Ministry under her. But now… without magic, he couldn’t invent, he couldn’t torture—and he couldn’t torture the Muggle way either because of that bloody deal that his wife had made with Potter and Shacklebolt.
[break][break]
Since then, he had been trying to decide what to do to fill his time and he had, in passing, thought about how he nearly missed all the paperwork at the Ministry at this point. That was why he had decided to come in here today. He might have not wanted to work in the Ministry where his wife would be his boss, but desperate times… and it wasn’t like he would technically answer to her in this position. He would answer to Griff, and somehow, that didn’t bother him at all
[break][break]
It was still morning, though nearing on lunch, when he made it to the Ministry. He hadn’t been in too much of a rush, figuring that he would catch Griffith before he headed to lunch or something like that. The department looked much as he remembered, though the aurors-in-training looked a little too relaxed for his tastes. He’d rather them look a little afraid that they were doing something wrong, but to each their own, he supposed.
[break][break]
Eventually, he made it to Griff’s door and knocked, pausing for a reply before pushing it open and stepping inside. “Griff,” he said with a nod, “Are you busy?” He figured it was worth asking, even if he expected that his… whatever Griff was, depending on what Davina was to Andromeda at the time, would make time to talk to him.

When the days are cold
And the cards all fold
And the saints we see
Are all made of gold

There was never a shortage of things to do. That was for sure and being one of the few people in this department that still had their magic meant that he was going to have to help out with more than just his own paperwork. That was okay, he knew that it was important to do what he could. But Griff could admit that this was a lot. That he hadn’t known that taking this job a year ago was going to turn out like this. He missed the days when his biggest concern was trying to get Andromeda to agree to travel with a guard. He knew that she had hated it for the five minutes that he had actually gotten her to agree, but now they couldn’t do that.

She was on her own. And he hated that. He hated that she was on her own more now than he had hated it before, but he had to trust that people had bigger things to worry about than trying to kill her. They were going to have to watch their own though. It was the purebloods that he was worried about turning on her. Because she was allowing things that they never would have tolerated if they hadn’t all been sick. If everyone still had their magic, the world would be a much different place right now, and he knew it. He thought that they all knew it.

Griffith wasn’t discounting that he knew that she had wanted some of the changes. He knew because he had asked her. He knew because he had cornered her and demanded to know if he needed to make things go away, or if they were going to be okay. He knew because he had been the one that had escorted Hermione Potter into his mother-in-law’s office, and then had promptly been dismissed from the room. He knew because Rodolphus had warned him off of the Potters to start with, and if that hadn’t been unexpected, he didn’t know what was.

But he knew that that choice had been made for Andromeda. And it was one that he had respected. It was one that they were going to have to live with now. Because they were just here now. They were in a position that he didn’t want to think about changing. They couldn’t. Not with a Potter in Andromeda’s office. Not when he was getting owls from Harry Potter himself asking for meetings. He would push that off as long as he thought that it was possible, but he knew that it was something that they were going to have to address. This was all something that they were going to have to address.

The Epidemic had changed things, and now he was without a Head of his Training Program. For the moment he had been covering that himself, but that wasn’t going to last forever. He needed someone to do that job, and he didn’t even have anyone in mind. He didn’t have anyone on the staff that could do it, and the last thing that he wanted to do was hire Potter to do that. That would just be like inviting him to come back in and take over.

As much as Griffith hadn’t wanted this job, and as much as he’d try and give it back to Rodolphus in a heartbeat if he decided that he wanted, or even made the smallest mention of it, he didn’t think that the man would take it. And he didn’t want to give it up to anyone else either. Family first. Always. The knock on his door was not unexpected these days, but the face was. Speak of the devil… “Always. Come in…” He nodded to the chairs in front of his desk, he would always make time for the older man, he had to. They were family, in what context depended on the day, but more often than not, family.

[break][break]
[attr="class","cbody"]Rodolphus wasn’t entirely sure that this would prove to be a good idea. He just knew that he had to do something. Sitting around the house wasn’t an option anymore. Without knowing just when a cure to the epidemic was going to come, he had to do something. Spell invention wasn’t an open—he couldn’t even unlock a door, let alone do anything else. There was nothing else for him to fill his time with and so, suddenly, a desk job did not sound all that bad.
[break][break]
It wasn’t like he could go out and find some Mudbloods to torture, or even Muggles. Since Andromeda’s meeting with Shacklebolt and Potter, she had warned him against anything that was illegal. Clemency only went so far, apparently. If he did something and got caught for it, then she would be in a tight spot. That meant that his old means of fun couldn’t even be used to pass the time. It had been frustrating—that on top of everything that was already happening, he couldn’t even do that now.
[break][break]
The reasoning behind it was sound. The last place that he wanted to end up was in Azkaban. There was not a chance in hell that he was going to end up there again. If it came down to it, he would die before he went back to prison, and that meant playing nice with Andromeda’s request to not break the law and get caught. But without magic and without that pastime, he had nothing but time on his hands. He had decided, that with Andromeda at work every day, he needed to do something. He couldn’t just sit around at home, with the boys. Even though the house-elves and the nanny were technically in charge of them, it still felt far too much like he was staying at home with them.
[break][break]
That just wasn’t something that he wanted to do. He was a father because the Lestrange line needed heirs, but he wasn’t actually interested in the whole process of raising them. He didn’t take care of them and didn’t honestly pay all that much attention to them when he didn’t have to. There were people that might think there was something wrong for him for thinking that—he thought his brother might be among them. Rabastan had been doing better in passing weeks… more normal than Rodolphus had seen him in a long time.
[break][break]
Rodolphus, however, was not doing as well. Getting a job at the Ministry was the only idea that he had. It was the best way that he could think of to try to do something. Anything at all. All that he had to do was convince Griff to rehire him. He wasn’t all that fussed with what the job actually was, as long as it was something to do. He was pretty sure that it wouldn’t be all that difficult to do. He nodded in response to the man’s words, before sitting down in one of the chairs. “So… I want a job.” Rodolphus figured there was no harm in just coming right out with it, since he wasn’t one for small talk.

WHEN THE DAYS ARE COLD
AND THE CARDS ALL FOLD
AND THE SAINTS WE SEE
ARE ALL MADE OF GOLD

He had made sure that there was always something to do. He knew that there was no shortage of things for someone with magic in this department, but he also knew that he was the Head of the Office, and that that meant that he had more than just field work on his mind. He knew that he had to try and figure out what he was going to do about it. Because they couldn’t keep this up. They couldn’t keep existing in this state that they were in now. There was too much at stake. They had to figure out what came next, and when, and how.

He wanted guards back on the Minister when she went out in public, even if they were armed with muggle weaponry. He wanted someone watching her. And he knew that she was going to hate it, but it was time. There were people that made threats, and there were times when he could ignore them, and there were times when he couldn’t. He couldn’t keep ignoring them when they came in mass like that. He couldn’t keep ignoring them when there was too much there to ignore. He had to do something about all of it.

And keeping her safe was his responsibility. He knew that it was. Not only was she the Minister. She was family. And he was the last one left in this family that had magic. Somehow, he had been spared all of this, and what was he doing with it? Sitting behind a bloody desk. Yes, what he did was important, he didn’t doubt that. But he couldn’t help but think that maybe he could be more useful actually out in the field. He could shadow her himself. Then he wouldn’t have to subject anyone else to that abuse. But he couldn’t.

Because Rodolphus had given him this job. Literally. He had handed it to him and told him that he was going to do it. Because he wasn’t going to work for Andromeda. Which really made sense on some level. Her husband being in charge of the police, and her security was not the best idea. But somehow, he had a feeling it had less to do with what made sense, and a whole lot more to do with Rodolphus’s pride. That was not really his problem though. He had been given this job, and he was going to do it right. He had been doing it right. For a year now.

They had been at this a year, and what a year it had been… Everything had changed, and in some ways, nothing had. There were still things that were exactly the same as they had been a year ago. And there were things that were drastically different. It was trying to balance the two and find some middle ground to stand on that was really getting to him. If he knew the answers, he would have shared them by now. But Griff didn’t have the answers. He just had more and more questions about what it was that he was actually supposed to be doing, and how he was going to manage to do it.

He hadn’t been expecting Rodolphus to sit down across from him, but he hadn’t been expecting what he had to say even more. “You want a job?” There was some genuine surprise on his face. He hadn’t thought that Rodolphus would work in the Ministry again. He had thought that he was done with that when he had left before. Him coming back now was a testament to just another change that they hadn’t seen coming before. “Do you want this job?” It had been his before, after all. Griffith wouldn’t hesitate to give it back if that was what he was after.

[break][break]
[attr="class","cbody"]When Andromeda had said she wanted to be Minister, he had laughed. Actually laughed, right at her face, because there had just been no doubt in his mind that she was joking. He couldn’t fathom a reason for his wife to be interested in that position. She had never even had a job or an interest in politics. Yes, hospital politics. He knew that being the director of the hospital had been no easy feat, but that was a far cry different than being the leader of the United Kingdom. That was politics to the extreme, and he had not seen or understood a single reason why she would be interested in a position like this one. He had thought that she would regret it. He was prepared to say ‘I told you so’ when she did. It just had seemed like a horribly bad idea.
[break][break]
It was a hell of a lot of work, and for what? No one ever liked the Minister. They would always make mistakes, and with purists in charge? They could always find something to pick at. Wentzell had technically been doing the job just fine, but still everyone had found reasons to get rid of him. There was no reason to think they wouldn’t turn on Andromeda eventually too. Yes, she was sacred twenty-eight, but that wouldn’t shield her entirely. They would still be just as willing to stab her in the back to have the next person who thought they could do better take over. It had been a cycle as of late. There was no reason to think that was going to change.
[break][break]
And why would she want anything to do with that? Why would she want to deal with all that work for no reward? No one was going to thank her. It was an absolutely thankless job, and he did not understand why she wanted it.
[break][break]
Already, he thought there were some people that would be ready to replace her. She had made things easier on Muggleborns, and he thought that was only going to continue. He didn’t think his wife was as dark as she liked to let people believe. If he was going to place a bet on it, he’d say he thought the registration would be completely over by year’s end. Maybe even before that. If she could pull it off, he’d guess it was over by summer. And there would be plenty of people that would have a hell of a lot to say about that.
[break][break]
He was going to have to deal with that, and without magic, that was a lot harder to do. His name still instilled fear in some, and he could kill with his hands as easily as he could with a wand, but it was not going to be easy to defend his wife without magic.
[break][break]
As much as he hadn’t wanted to work for his wife in any way, shape, or form, sitting at home without his magic had been worse. Rodolphus had decided that he should at least see if Griff had any openings. If he could get any job in the department, then he would at least have something to do. It would definitely be better than watching his wife go to work every day. That just was not something that he could do anymore. Chuckling at Griff’s words, Rodolphus shook his head. “I don’t need this job. I let you have it. It’s yours,” he wasn’t just going to walk back in here and expect it back. He wasn’t even sure he wanted that job. It had been a hell of a lot of paperwork. “Just a job. Do you have any open?” He didn’t care what it was, as long as it was something—and preferably a bit more than just being an auror.

WHEN THE DAYS ARE COLD
AND THE CARDS ALL FOLD
AND THE SAINTS WE SEE
ARE ALL MADE OF GOLD

Griffith knew that his efforts in the Ministry were not going unnoticed. He knew that his uncle was aware that he was doing his best. But he also knew that he needed more people. He needed aurors that had their magic. He needed people that were going to train and learn how to use the rest of the equipment. He was spending more time here than he was at home, and he had never wanted that. But there was no stopping it now. He knew that he was leaving Davina and Ava Blair alone more than he should. But having his magic and trying to run this office. HE couldn’t just go home, and lounge around when there were always things to do.

He wanted to train them himself. He wanted to do classes, and he wanted to do field work, and he was trying to run the department, while doing all of that. And he knew that he couldn’t keep this pace up. He was going to burn himself out. But they had to do something. And of all of the departments in the building. There were only a handful that they actually needed to make sure that society was functioning, as a society. They were going to have to do something. Law Enforcement. Justice. Treasury. Commerce. And International Cooperation. Those were the ones that they needed the most.

The rest of them they could make do without. They could figure out how to get along without them. But this floor… They needed this floor. And he knew hat he had to get everything that he could out of those that he was working with. Those that were working for him. They were going to have to try and figure out what came next. He didn’t know. He didn’t have the answers. And when Catrine had left he had had a void that he had to fill. And filling it himself was working for the moment, but it wasn’t going to last. He was going to have to come up with something else.

Pulling an auror out of the field didn’t feel like the answer though. He didn’t want to take anyone away from what they were supposed to be doing. And he knew that if he was going to put guards back on the Minister, he was already going to cut his police force down. Because he wanted at least one of the ones on the Minister to have magic at all times, and that was going to affect who was where, and when. They needed help. But he didn’t know who to ask for help. It wasn’t like she could just get him more aurors. They could ask for more from the ICW but Griffith didn’t think they needed to advertise that they needed help.

The last thing that they needed was the ICW deciding that they were going to come and pay a visit. Still, he knew that they needed help, and he wasn’t sure that that wasn’t the best idea that they had had in awhile. Calling in help from elsewhere. He was half tempted to go down to Cooperation and ask Nylund if he felt like joining up while he was here. They needed someone to teach, and he thought that he could at least get some use out of the man. If half of the things that Catrine had said when she was pissed were true, he would have loved to have him.

But right now, that wasn’t something that he needed to focus on. Instead he could focus on the man that had been his brother-in-law. Was now sort of his father-in-law. It really depended on Andromeda and Davina’s mood what they were to one another. And it was easier without labels. They were family. And that was all that really mattered at the end of the day. When he had said that he wanted a job, Griff had been half relieved that he wanted this one back. “Damn…” There was a smile on his face, but he knew that it was a lot of work that Rod wasn’t going to want either. “I’ve got more than a few…” Grabbing the file of open positions in the department he chuckled lightly, “You don’t want to run Auror Training by chance, do you? We need a Head Instructor, and I’m a little swamped trying to do it myself.”

[attr="class","cbody"]He didn’t know if this was going to help or not. There was a chance that he’d tire with this job within the month and be right out of the Ministry again. But he had thought it was worth a shot. He needed something to do. He needed a way to fill his time, because being at home as much as he was while his wife was at work was not something that he was okay with. It was not something that he liked, at all. Rodolphus didn’t care that Andromeda worked—of course, he didn’t. As long as he had known her, she had worked. He had never expected her to be the kind of wife that sat at home all day. But he was certainly not going to be the type of husband that sat at home all day. That was just not an option for him and, without his magic, his options were limited.

He figured that a job in the Ministry was better than no job at all. He didn’t want his old job back. Rodolphus didn’t honestly know what he was looking for. It wasn’t that he just wanted to be an auror, but he thought that he’d take being an instructor. Initiating new recruits into the Death Eaters had been his job for some time. Getting through that rigorous process was a hell of a lot more dangerous than becoming an auror. It was something that not everybody survived. So, he was quite certain that he could train up a couple of aurors. By the time he was done with them, they’d be a hell of a lot better off than they would have been with any of their other trainers. There were things that he could teach them that were most certainly not in any handbook.
[break][break]
There was a chance that was a little bit frowned upon. Since his wife’s meeting with the bloody Order, what was and wasn’t allowed had gotten a little less clear. He probably should be sticking to how they were meant to be trained. Probably. It was likely frowned upon to start training with his methods, even if he thought that they would be much better off for it. Oh well—he supposed that remained to be seen. He would have to find out just how these aurors were being trained these days.

Rodolphus was not going to say no to a job as the head instructor. That was much better than just being one of many instructors, in his opinion. It put him in charge of something and gave him more power over how they were actually being trained. Yes, everything still went through Griff, but he didn’t think that Griff would have any problems with his methods. Unless he had been spending too much time with Andromeda and had gone soft on him. He supposed that too would be something he’d figure out later. “I can do that.” He had initiated enough Death Eaters in the past to find himself completely qualified for that position.
