Character History:

Nikolai was born in 1979, and was one of four siblings. He had an older sister, Marina, a younger brother, Anton, and a young sister, Nika. He had a relatively uneventful childhood, as his family lived on a large farm in a small village of Russia. He attended Durmstrang, and it was there that he met whom his family had arranged for him to marry, whose name was Vasilisa. Durmstrang went by uneventfully for him as well, and he graduated with good enough marks to do just about anything he wanted. However, all that he really knew about was what he knew of his family’s farm, so he moved back there after graduation. Once he and Vasilisa got married, only six months after graduation, they got a small farm of their own in the same village. Since that simple type of life was the only kind he had ever really known outside of being at Durmstrang, he was very content with this. His wife, however, was unhappy when she realized that she was unable to carry a child to term, and after several miscarriages over the next few years, the couple gave up entirely on this. It was on Christmas Eve when he was 21 years old that he got into a fight with this wife, and left his parents’ house where they were staying for the holiday to go to the only pub in town. It was then, while he was gone, that some Muggles broke into the house, though no one quite knows what they were after. The men killed Nikolai’s parents, all of this siblings and his wife.

After the deaths of his family, Nikolai had a brief period where he really did nothing but drink. He immediately moved to Moscow after the funeral, falling out of contact with the majority of his friends and family friends. Nikolai had a cheap flat in an extremely bad area, and was simply content to drink every night, not fully being able to accept the loss of his family. However, eventually the wounds began to even slightly heal, and he determined what it was that he wanted to do next. Because it had been Muggles that had killed his family, he wanted to do something to help crime both in the Muggle and Magical world. He began his career in a Muggle police stations, where he eventually did work undercover. Since gangs were becoming a bigger problem in Russia, this was what he spent most of his time on. Nikolai was undercover with this gang for the better part of three years, until his mid-twenties. Once he had gotten that experience under his belt, he applied at the Ministry, working as an Auror for several years as well.

It was because of the experience that he was able to have in both worlds that he eventually decided to open up his own private security firm, working on cases involving both the magical and muggle worlds. He would help to solve just about anything, and would help prominent wizarding and muggle families when they needed extra security due to any number of problems. It was, then, in 2009, that he met his future wife, Persephone, at a bar and the pair had a one-night stand thinking that they would never see each other again. After all, Moscow is an incredibly large place, and what would the odds have to be for something like that to happen? Soon after that night, Nikolai was contacted by a prominent Wizarding family that required some extra security for a while. Since the family was so important, he got in contact with the Ministry, who sent over additional assistance… and that was how he re-met his one-night stands from months back once again. They worked on that case together for a little over a year before things died down for that family and the additional family detail was no longer required.

A few months after that, Nikolai and Persephone began to date, and dated for a couple years with very little incident as far as work was involved. He continued to run his private security firm, working cases consistently, while sometimes requesting additional assistance from the Ministry for Aurors, though for the most part the cases were ones that he was able to handle himself—though that could be more because of his unwillingness to request outside assistance unless he really needed it, as he likes to solve issues by himself. Soon after that, his girlfriend got word that her nephew had died and she had left for the funeral, though everything was so chaotic at the time in Russia that he was not able to join her, and she was not able to stay gone for longer than the funeral.

The pair married in October of 2014, and only a few months later his wife got word that her brother and his family had been killed. Although it was clearly time to head to England because of this, they were currently working with a Muggle politician that was having some serious issues with one of the gangs that was gaining prominence at the time. Because of Nikolai’s experience with the gangs, it was an easy decision to take the case. However, they were able to figure out getting replacements, which they were able to do starting the morning of the funeral. Unfortunately, the evening before, when Nikolai was simply doing a perimeter sweep, that he was caught off guard and stabbed once in the back, and then another time when the gang member recognized Nikolai from his work under cover. Since the perimeter checks normally took at least an hour, he was bleeding out for at least that amount of time until Persephone found him, and was unconscious by that time.

Due to the fact that they were in a Muggle area, Nikolai was taken to a Muggle hospital, his injuries unfortunately treated in that fashion. Because of this, it took a month for him to be released from the hospital, though they were unsure if he was even going to make it through the first few nights. Once he was released, in February, they finally packed up and moved to England to take custody of Persephone’s niece, and Nikolai had to shut down his company. Due to his injuries, he was forced out of that career, and is currently a foreign delegate in the department of international magical cooperation, though the desk work is something that irritates him on a daily basis.

Plots and Politics
Where does your character stand in the treatment of death eaters and their families? Because Nikolai spent most of his life in Russia, and when he wasn't in Russia he was at Durmstrang, Nikolai was surprised when he moved to England to see how Death Eaters are treated. However, he does also realize that criminals need to be punished for their actions. Since it wasn't his fight, as he was in Russia, he doesn't feel as though he can condemn the former Death Eaters and their families the way that others seem do to easily. This is because his thinking is that enough time has passed that they've surely paid for their crimes.

How was your character and their family affected by the reign and death of Voldemort? In Russia, he felt relatively separate from the problems of England, especially due to the small village that he was living in at the time. Word about Voldemort really didn't get to them often, and usually they didn't get many details about it in any case. He and his family were not very affected by this at all, really, though he was glad to hear when the man as defeated, simply because he did not envy any country having to deal with a dark wizard.

Family History:

Ivan was a Muggleborn that attended Durmstrang, and it was there that he met Alina. They found out that they were both from very similar areas in Russia, though Alina was from a halfblood family. Their years at Durmstrang were pretty uneventful, and they married soon after graduation, moving into the village that Ivan was from. Voldemort's first reign did not greatly affect Russia, and it was rare that they even got news about it since they were from such a small village. However, they were sure to keep apprised of all of the information they were able to get, and they felt bad for everything that was occurring, but glad that it wasn't close enough to affect them, especially upon the birth of their first child, Marina. After Marina came Nikolai and it was only two years after that that word came to them that Voldemort had been defeated. Although they never had to be too concerned, they did feel a slight weight being lifted off them, glad that the hard times were past for the U.K. They had two more children, Nika, and Anton.

Due to all of their hard work, they managed to grow their family farm throughout the year. Having all of their children around to help was beneficial to this, of course. All four of their children went to Durmstrang as well, for which Alina and Ivan were very proud. As was becoming more custom in their village, they had set up an arranged marriage for Nikolai, as he was their eldest son. But they were happy to see that Nikolai and Vasilisa were getting on and that everything was going alright with them, even if there wasn't love beforehand.

However, one Christmas, a group of Muggles broke into the family home, though no one really knows why or what they were looking for. Ivan, Alina, Nika, Marina, Anton and Vasilisa were all killed, though Nikolai was spared since he was at a local pub.
