Karel wasn't thrilled about attending the ball, he really didn't want to be here, but one of the things he'd learnt growing up whenever his parents threw balls. It was a perfect chance to make connections and that was why he was here. Lots of teenagers, more than likely a lot of drama and lots of people wanting things, things that he may be able to help... that was if he believed it to be worth his time. He strolled around the walls of the Great Hall, watching all the people dancing, flirting, eating and drinking and the majority were wearing costumes; it was like when Halloween came around, people forgot to act their age. Even the teachers were wearing costumes and Karel couldn't hide his distaste at seeing it, not that he was trying.

Scanning over the student body, his gaze fell on the Ravenclaw girl he'd been talking to briefly a few weeks ago and he nodded politely at her, unsure she'd even seen him, he wasn't overly friendly with @olivette but the fact that she wasn't dressed up earned her a bit of respect from him. Quite an achievement really. Karel approached the refreshment table and poured himself a cup of punch, taking a sip and watching the doorway as more people started to file in. One of the students he did notice though caused a wicked smile to creep onto his face and he finished his drink. If he was going to be wasting his time here he was going to have fun with it.

Karel refilled his cup and poured a second one before purposefully striding over to the Slytherin that had just entered, @miranda hated having things done for her and what was this? He was doing something nice for her. He found far too much enjoyment in riling the witch up. He never showed it outwardly, but if his parents or uncle saw him (after all, they were the only ones to see him... enjoy himself), they would probably have a few things to say about him tormenting Miranda. "Well hi there, my lady. Don't you look dazzling." He smirked, holding the second drink out for her, "I got you this, so that you didn't have to." He continued, a slight glint in his eyes. He was playing with fire, anyone who knew what his relationship with Miranda was would know that, but it was definitely worth it. Even if it caused just an hour or so of excitement for him.

Amy was in two feelings about Halloween. In some ways, she enjoyed the tradition and the history of the festival, on the other hand, she felt that it was a bit of enforced fun and a bit too frivolous for her liking. Still, the Hufflepuff would go to the school ball, in costume in any case. Both for appearances and because she knew her little brother would be looking for her at the ball and might need some company himself if he had no-else to hang about with. It was a burden of every older sister to look about for their little sibling like that she supposed.

That did not mean that the 15-year-old was not going to spend some time on her costume. A lot like her brother she was going to go for something from Welsh history. However, unlike her sibling and unlike herself last year she was not going to go for a Welsh creature. This year Amy wanted to bring a historical Welsh woman to life and commemorate the often forgotten women of Welsh history. She felt it her duty as a feminist to promote the successes and history of the women of Wales as much as possible. Especially as so much of history was about what men have done. Sometimes it felt like women didn’t achieve anything of note until recent times and that was just not true.

Gwenllian Ferch Gruffydd was the historical figure that the Hufflepuff decided to choose. She was a warrior princess that lead the Welsh on a patriotic revolt in 1136 against the Normans and was comparable to other legendary Celtic warrior women like Boadicea. Sadly Gwenllian was captured by the Normans and executed by beheading. However, for centuries after her death, Welshmen cried out ‘Revenge for Gwenllian” when engaging in battle.

Amy had enchanted her hair to be long and ginger for this one night, she was sure that it would be okay as it was part of the costume and she would revert it back to normal after the Halloween event. She wore a green robe with a metal chest piece over her chest; she carried a holster sword, which was obviously fake and merely a prop. It could not do any harm to anyone. The Hufflepuff witch was rather proud of her outfit. While she did not expect many people would get who it was, she was very willing to tell them. That was part of her whole point of wearing the costume after all.

As she entered the Great Hall, she scanned the room for anyone who might be there. She couldn’t see her brother anywhere, but when she spotted a boy with a cloak on and a horse’s skull taking out of it, Amy wily shook her head. ”Of course” she muttered to herself as she approached ”I might have known you would go as the Mari Lwyd” she said with a shake of her head. However, she knew that her own outfit was just as patriotic and proudly Welsh. It must be a Westwood family trait.

[attr="class","gummies"] Nick wasn't the world's biggest fan of Halloween, not by any means. He didn't quite understand everyone's fascination with dressing up as someone else and demanding treats-- especially because it wasn't really too big of a deal. He knew some of his friends in Singapore enjoyed it because it meant that they could throw lavish parties with their parents money, but Nick hadn't been home in over a year, so it wasn't like he could have enjoyed himself there anyway. He was still friends with everyone out of familial obligation, of course, so as soon as he graduated next year he was going to be invited regardless. Nick thought briefly that the next year would be more fun; he and Atha could do some sickening couples costume, they could drink, they could have fun. But he didn't want to think of the future, not really, because he knew what that meant. His grandmother had accepted his mother because she came from an affluent family, and her having magic had been a very large plus for them... And the fact that she had been proven to have a strong magical lineage, that was what had done it. But he and Atha... Well, Nick was going to be required to do his duty, and dating Atha wasn't it. He always thought that his parents were accepting, but his Ah Ma... Well, he couldn't imagine her being so accepting three years in a row, could he? She had only decided Lizzy could play professionally because their mother said that she couldn't. Why would she change her mind for him?

He was supposed to be the good, dutiful grandson. Nick always followed their rules no matter what was going on. He respected them at Hogwarts, when he was home, and when he was in Singapore. He dressed respectfully even for Halloween, even though he knew that they couldn't see him. He was Death, and his robes swam properly around him. Atha was thinking of dressing as something relatively amusing-- and inappropriate-- and Nick had begged him to reconsider. He wasn't sure what his boyfriend was going to be dressed as as he waited for him to hurry up and change, but Nick was willing to accept it no matter what. He just didn't want Atha to irk their Headmaster. After all, they weren't sure what the lines were for Headmaster Flint. He could have been annoyed at the dress, or Bonfils himself, or... Well, there was a whole bunch of things that could have annoyed him. Nick was just sure that Bellamy was one of the things, and... Well, Nick didn't want Atha to receive the same treatment. He wanted everything to be good. He wanted the year to be good and safe for everyone involved.

Especially with all of the adults getting sick. His mother had owled him in irritation-- she wanted into the country, but the borders had been shut down. Nick didn't know how he was supposed to help her, though. He couldn't. He was just a kid. But he responded apologetically, offering to do his best to help cure the thing-- you know, like he really was able to do such a thing. He was an intern for Mungo's, yeah, but apart from that... Well, he couldn't do much else. He ran errands, he learned what he needed to learn, and he was ready for his Healer-in-Training status by the end of the year. He was a hard-worker, wasn't he? He was ready. He was definitely ready. Nick frowned thoughtfully as he and Atha walked up the stairs to get to the Great Hall. Once arrived, he looked around the room. Wasn't it only three years ago that they were... happier? No, that was wrong. He just... Nick wanted to push three years ago and this year together, and then things would just make a little more sense. He wanted Atha, he wanted to be friendly with Amelia, he wanted to still be talking to Lizzy, and he just... He wanted things to make sense again.

halloween ball
Spooky scary skeletons
Send shivers down your spine

Halloween was always the most fun time of year to Dima. When he was little, boom candy. No arguments there. As he'd gotten older though that had changed. It became less about candy and more about costumes. And then less about that and more about enjoying the Halloween Ball and subsequent days with friends. This year, though, he hadn't really been looking forward to it. That was, until he had someone to ask. Dima had never taken any one person to a thing like this. Usually it was a group of them swarming the place all at once. Looking around now he saw that that, too, must have been a little bit of a phase. Many of the underclassmen were huddled into friend groups and people his own age stayed in smaller groups or simply in pairs.

He'd caught glimpse of @olivette and @alisander , mostly because of their costumes-- or rather, lack their of. Dima thought that was quite interesting, really. Either way they both looked nice and Dima cast a fast smirk at his teammates. He noticed another teammate, in an interesting getup as well though...he wasn't quite sure what he was. A horse God? Dima made a mental note to ask him about it, if not tonight then most certainly at their next practice. His own outfit was sort of vague but made enough sense next to Zoe's. A greaser next to a pink lady, what wasn't fun about that?

@emily had sort of laughed at him when he told her what he was going to be. Said he certainly had the hair for it. Walking back from the drink area he managed to catch her eye and couldn't help but smirk. He raised one cup in an attempt to gesture at his hair with a knowing face. She was bloody right. Dima scrunched his nose playfully at @zoee as he walked to her. "
So I've decided," he mused with a perked brow, "That we should dress like this all the time. Even for quidditch...No. Especially for quidditch."  A half smile formed on his face as he held one of the cups out for her to take. He could nearly imagine a heard of leather jacket Ravenclaws facing off against a swarm of pink lady Gryffindors, though seeing her like that he may very well have fallen off his broom.

Maddie had taken a long time picking what she wanted to wear tonight. Really, she had wanted to go as something scary, but she also wanted to be pretty- and scary and pretty was a difficult combination to obtain being thirteen years old. The options that remained were very used up and boring, things other students went with, and ideas that she directly discarded because they didn't fit her. In the end, she had thought about all the princesses that she liked, because she had always enjoyed dressing up as them. Most of them were blonde, so she had her pick, but at the same time- most of them were boring and she would've had to bring a prince along. Since she was going with Jamie, that would've been gross, and she didn't want to make Dio or Kamil dress up as a prince for her. That would imply a lot of things she didn't want to imply. Her only choice was a princess that didn't need a prince, but still fit her. Rapunzel was perfect and her dress' colour fit Maddie wonderfully, so it was settled. A quick visit to Aunt Mel's office got her hair long and shiny and thick, so she spent about an hour braiding it and putting flowers in it. Adelaide and Katelijne had been done ages before she was, but they didn't look as good as she did either. They hadn't waited for her, but that was fine. Jamie had been waiting for her in the common room- but as soon as they got to the Great Hall she told him she could leave. He should spend his time with his friends and she with hers, it wasn't as if she was going to tattle on him about that. She didn't even understand why he had to take her to the ball in the first place, it was just a school party.
Her first idea was to find Dio and Kamil, but they were being loud in a corner so she figured there was no hurry to get to them. First, she went to get a drink, quickly before anyone spiked the punch. Then she stood with her back to the table for a few seconds, looking around the room for someone to talk to. Meeting her aunt's eyes, she gave a little wave and a smile, touching her hair to show off how pretty it was. However, she didn't approach, because she might make use of the fact that she still had a teacher as a relative to keep the other second years and the first years in line, but she wasn't going to be the student that spent a Halloween Ball talking to a teacher. That would've been sad. Instead, she looked around the room. She spotted Amelia Zabini, Kamil's half sister. The seventh year prefect who hadn't been chosen as Head Girl. It was pretty disappointing for Slytherin, but since the Head Girl was still from their own house- a nobody halfblood, instead of a somebody halfblood. Maddie didn't think it was funny, unlike several of the other younger girls. She thought it was a failure.
Maddie turned around, half deciding to go directly to the boys anyway when she spotted Luna and Miranda. Mum approved of the Powell girl and Luna was the daughter of Aunt Andi's replacement at the hospital. Considering both her parents had been under her dad's care, she had been nice to the older girl. She had started to make her way over there when she suddenly came face to face with another older student. "Oh! I'm sorry, I didn't see you, Emily." Maddie smiled up at the other girl. She didn't know the other very well, but Maddie supposed that she was nice enough. Certainly enough for a quick chat, even if it was brought about by an almost near-collision. "You look lovely."

[attr="class","textbodslyth"]Miranda initially was not going to dress up for Halloween. Because it was kind of silly, and she didn't really see the benefit of it. It was just a few hours of mingling with some friends, and she was getting to the point in her life where dressing up seemed dumb. But then... well, she had stumbled across it by chance. Still, Miranda hadn't hesitated to write home with the idea, and had quickly roped Katelijne into it. Mum and Dad would be Morticia and Gomez, of course, and Miranda was eagerly awaiting pictures of that. She would be Wednesday, which meant that Kate just had to be Kitty Kat--and what an adorable lion she made. Admittedly, her little sister had been a little hard to con into the idea, but promises of bringing back some sugar quills next time she was in Hogsmeade had won her over. Besides, Miranda thought that this costume was perfect for her. And no other one would suffice, in her own opinion.

So she had done it. Wednesday Addams. It was a relatively easy costume to put together. Obviously, she owned a black dress. It was the most recurring colour in her wardrobe. And she just used her school socks, and a white shirt. Black lipstick Mum had sent her, and a Colour Change Charm to make her hair a little darker. She had gotten some help getting it into braids, and Miranda thought that the final product was pretty spot on. After that, it had just been a matter of helping Katelijne with her lion makeup--which Miranda thought she had done a rather good job of.

Her little sister was probably mingling around somewhere. Miranda had spotted one of Kate's dorm mates, @maddie. Miranda rather liked her, and she gave the younger girl a small smile when she caught sight of her, then continued mingling around. She was hoping to spot @luna, in all honesty. Miranda rather liked her dorm mate and they happened to get on pretty well. Besides, she was curious to see what costume the other girl had put together.

Unfortunately, her eyes landed on @karel, and Miranda had to fight the urge to turn around and head in the opposite direction. If anything, Karel made her feel just a little bit more like Wednesday Addams in that particular moment. Her eyes narrowed at him as he spoke, flitting between his face and the cup he was holding out to her. He knew exactly what he was doing. Miranda grabbed the cup from him, her eyes still narrowed in a glare. "I have hands. But thanks, I guess," she replied. Honestly, she didn't know why he riled her up so much. Karel just always seemed ready to be pushing people's buttons, and Miranda never took kindly to that sort of thing. It was really unfortunate that they were on the Quidditch team together; although, Miranda would admit that that was just about the only time she didn't feel like telling him to shove off.

Truth be told, she had still been planning to be Medusa. She was able to kill people who hurt her, she turned them to stone and no one bothered her. So many of her issues would be solved if she could do that. But try as she might, Vi wasn't able to turn her hair to suitable snake imitations. Besides, she'd be too tempted to string stones engraved with petrifying runes across her neck. Not that they would work, but she knew were several who wouldn't miss her meaning, her desire and she had no intention of being exposed to curses.

So Clio's suggestion of Persephone, Queen of the Underworld and of spring was appreciated, because she was still strong, after all. She had a mother who cared, a father who was unreliable. Well, maybe. The father might have been Poseidon, in some myths. No, she couldn't be that cruel. Dad was sick, after all, wasn't he? He was in pain, he was suffering. But Persephone was still. . .she was more passive than Vi wanted. Her mother was more Persephone, so Vi's trying to be Medusa changed to Demeter because Vi would bring a winter to the world if she could for the safety of her family-- for her mother, for her father, her brother.

"You don't?" Violet raised an eyebrow. She'd been there for the tail end of @clio 's sentence. She half-regretted she'd be convincing enough for Clio to not bring her weapons. Her reasoning had been far too valid, that both would be far too tempted to use them. It would be easy enough to pretend she'd been aiming for something else. . .

"I do. Maybe even me, if that's what it takes." Her voice was quiet, low enough for only Clio's ears. She had no true intention of stirring up a fuss, knowing it could go back to hurt her parents, hurt her brother. "Everyone acts like they've forgotten he's a Death Eater again, that they're in charge still. About everyone who's gone, or killed." Phoebe had been the friend to connect Clio and her, and Phoebe had been a house-slave murdered. She doubted the killer would ever face justice, because Phoebe was just another Mudblood girl. "Arthur'll be here soon, by the way. If not already."

The Grey Lady was to make an appearance for some time, to see to it that all was going well. A quarter of the children were of her lot, after all, and the rest had belonged to her parents. It was her duty to watch, to see that they came to as little harm as possible, to see that they not were harassed by each other. There had been many a young man who found his first conversation with the Grey Lady to be a series of general threats and a rhapsody of insults. Gatherings such as these were usually certain to have one or two instances, and so it was best that she show up to make her presence known, at least.

She didn't believe that there were many here who she might recall doing such a thing, but years often faded together. When had students started showing up in costumes, after all? Many were cheap and tawdry things, others students had put effort and magic into. Still it was all very strange, far too modern for her own tastes. American, she believed the now-common term was. In another half-century they'd perhaps see how foolish they were and the children would put it all behind them. Such were the trends.

In her usual All Hallow's Eve tradition, she'd glided in through the ceiling. She'd refused an escort tonight, as she would be only arriving late the the Deathday celebration after, and she had no wish to cause another lateness. Draben had offered, and she'd turned him down again. Though an irritating spirit, he was harmless and usually meant well, so she had no true objections about him.

The Grey Lady watched the students mingling beneath her, keeping a careful eye on the corners.

Halloween balls had always been a favourite of Vet’s. She liked to take in all the decorations that the house elves would have gone to the trouble of hanging up. Additionally, it was fun to see who took the trouble of getting a costume. This year she had just chosen a nice dress and she was fine with that. With what she and Alisander had discussed for later that night, she didn’t want the hassle of having to get out of the costume. She wanted a fun night and she hoped that she got that. Vet was probably over thinking it all but it was going to be her first time and understandably so but she didn’t want to seem like like the girl who was worrying constantly. She trusted her friend and was happy to know he was going to do right by her.

Her main priority now was to enjoy the ball and to put that worry aside and if she was lucky to eliminate it completely. She had done her best to look nice but she knew she got attention regardless and she secretly loved it. @dima and @alisander knew that and they often made fun of herfor it. It wasn’t a bad thing. They probably enjoyed teasing her for it. Vet was a Buchanan and they had their connections, heck, she realised that each time she was at Mungo’s for her internship and she met yet some other person who knew her. She was proud of her work and that of what her father did and even what her mother had achieved during her time playing.

If it hadn’t been for the sport then her parents would have likely never met and she wouldn't be here, as cliche as that sounded. The witch was happy just go tonight, see what everyone ended up wearing as well as maybe having a dance or two. She was happy that Alisander had been happy for be her date. She had a feeling that he would have a long list of people who would want to be their date for the ball so she felt very lucky to be his tonight. They had been friends for years now and she just looked forward for being with him tonight.

”Thanks” The witch smirked a little as he complimented her. Vet looked around to see who else she could spit. She found @karel. The two of them weren’t friends but they often traded words and they werent’ always of the polite kind. She was impressed he had decided go down the suit angle as well. She saw a wide variety of costumes tonight. was sporting a horse head, she was interested to see if he was going to be able to drink anything tonight.

”Well, we could go bother Dima and his date but let’s leave them until a little later” she smiled as she looked to their fellow sixth year again. It was still early in the night. ”Hey” she smiled at Clio looking at her fellow sixth year.

halloween ball
the black swan

Oralie had spent a great deal of time on costume this year--as she did every year. The witch loved Halloween. It was a chance to be something all together different than what she was in life. Her costumes were always still distinctly feminine--and never sluggish, of course. The holiday did not give an excuse to be a tart. This year, the Slughorn had become the infamous Black Swan.

Her black hi-lo tulle skirt, at its shortest, brushed just below mid-thigh (as the school dress code required--but truly any shorter would have made her self conscious and uncomfortable)---at its longest, in the back, it brushed along the backs of her knees, felt with each step. Once she arrived in the Great Hall, the witch slipped off the feathered cloak that complimented her costume, placing it down on a vacant table. The cloak was incredibly extra and was only necessary if, for some reason, she found herself escaping the event for a bit of fresh air outside--a very probable occurrence later in the night when she was in need of a break from the student filled festivities.

The witch smiled as she drifted through the crowd, greeting others she was acquainted with, complimenting costumes politely. A little first year Slytherin who always seemed to find something to ask her about in the common room asked for a dance; his crush was too adorable to deny him the request. Thankfully, the song was a short one--and Oralie made her excuses, putting distance quickly between herself and the younger students.

Fetching a drink seemed like a reasonable way to pass a bit of time. Punch at school gatherings was always suspect for being spiked, but it was early in the evening. It probably was still just sugary sweetness. The lady she was supposed to be should have been happy that was the case--but the sliver of her that had fallen under Ian's influence thought something more adult to sip would make this evening more fun.
