Meredith is a very calculating person and she'll only go out of her way to stand up for someone if she can preserve her own safety/benefit from it - unless its her family that's involved. Brennan is fiercely loyal and a bit impulsive, so if it was any of his sisters or their families, he wouldn’t hesitate to stand up for them. And if it was someone he didn’t know, he would still probably go out of his way to help them out.
