[attr="class","reasonbodcas"]It was her first dance as Headmistress of Hogwarts and Isolde wasn’t sure what to think yet. The room was decorated beautifully – hearts and delicate roses strung up in all directions.

A large hexagonal dance floor decorated the center of the Great Hall, surrounded by various tables adorned with food and pink-colored punch. Cocktail tables and low seated tables sprinkled throughout would make sure that no student trying to wear those god-awful five-inch heels would have to stand all night.

With the help of her staff, she believed this would be the best Valentine’s Day Dance yet. Of course, there had been some push back from students, but she understood. After all, she was assigning them dates. She understood where the apprehension came from. Isolde remembered the days of being a teenager. But she was doing this for a learning experience. She had been hired to mend the bridge between the darkness and the light. Neutralize Hogwarts so it was a place where all students felt safe. She wanted them to get to know one another – perhaps other students that they had never spoken to in their lives.

Cupid’s Got Bad Aim was a scapegoat for her own agenda: friendship between houses. Blurring the lines between the crimson, navy, gold, and emerald. She wanted them to begin to see one another as people first, before they dissected their house allegiance. Would it work? Honestly, Isolde had high hopes, but knowing her students, they would most likely abandon their dates as soon as they walked through the doors. Perhaps – just maybe – there would be a few that would embrace these friendships.

With a smile, she glanced down at the already crowded dance floor as the sound of Wizarding Wrock echoed through the Great Hall. Tonight would be good for all of them, she thought, pressing her glass of pink punch to her lips and taking a small sip before she walked back to the Staff Table to greet some of her fellow employees.

[attr="class","wordz"] Violet knew a little. They were both on the Quidditch team, after all. She guessed she put up with her more than other people, mostly because of that. Marigold was a little too chipper for her now, but mostly everyone was. They'd gotten along better before, before everything had happened, and Vi's mum had gone missing for a year, before Phoebe and Mina and Maita and Artemisia were taken from the school, before Mina and Phoebe had been murdered. She'd gone to visit Domum over the holiday, and she'd been told Maita and Artemisia were safe on the Continent, but she still worried about them. She'd also thought they were dead, after all.

Marigold was also luckily in Hufflepuff, so she hadn't needed to find her way to the dorms or wait awkwardly outside. Well, she was still waiting awkwardly, because all Vi had done was tug a brush through her curls. She wasn't trying to look good for anyone, after all, but her hair had gotten knotted from the flying she'd done before, and it would probably look bad if she went to the dance with tangled hair. Not that she cared, really, but Marigold might be bothered, and if Vi had to go to the dance, it was probably best not to irritate her teammate.

"You look nice." Truthfully, Vi didn't really know what nice was really supposed to look like, but Marigold was. . .put-together? Neat hair? Something like that. That was what counted, right? She squinted at the pink room, glancing around for or @clio . She doubted they were lucky enough to get each other. "I don't dance, though, so if you actually want to do that, you're free to find a better person."

She could admit that she hadn’t wanted to go to this dance. The last thing that she wanted to do was go to a dance with an assigned date. Lyla didn’t particularly get along with everyone. And it wasn’t because she hated one group. It wasn’t because she cared about things like that, but it was more to do with the fact that she nearly always felt like she was too old for this place. She had a plan. Oxford. Pre-Law. Then law school. Then the Ministry. Then the International Quidditch Association. She had it all planned out. Her life was perfectly planned out. But she thought that that made her different.

It would always make her different. And that was okay. She didn’t really think that she needed to be like everyone else. But there were times when she wanted to be. And dances… Well, dances were one of those times. Still, she knew that she was a prefect, and she was a quidditch captain, and this was Aunt Isolde’s attempt at House Unity or whatever. Lyla wasn’t going to kick that in the waste bin just because she didn’t want to go to a party with an assigned date.

Maybe it wouldn’t have been so dreadful if she knew who it was. There were a couple of options that she wouldn’t have hated. She had gotten it out of her aunt that they weren’t romantic pairings. And so, she thought that there was a good chance that she would get someone fun. Like @roxanne . She could have handled being partnered with her best friend. And that would have been a good match. They were from different houses, after all, and they had quidditch in common. There wouldn’t have been anything wrong with that match in her mind.

Lions she liked. Lyla had always gotten along well with them. There had been Roxy, and Red, and she thought that if she was going to get along with other houses, it was always lions that she gravitated towards. Nick had been a lion, after all. And she knew that Cal was a snake, but she thought that Anderson might just be a lion. It wouldn’t matter, really. Unless he was a Hufflepuff… But Lyla knew her brother better than that, and she knew her mother better than that. Olivia Graves would not have given birth to a Hufflepuff.

Still, she had ended up coming with a Hufflepuff, and she smiled over at as she looked around the room once more. The lists in the common rooms had included everyone, and she knew exactly who she was looking for, but she was also trying to be nice. Atha was the Hufflepuff captain, and if she was going to get a quidditch captain that wasn’t Roxy, she would have rather come with him than with Oralie. If for no other reason than the girl was a year younger than her, and she didn’t really know her. That would have been awkward, at best.

Pulling her long, curled hair, over one shoulder she nodded towards one of the tables that had punch sitting out. “Should we grab some punch before or after someone decides to try and spike it?”

Medea had had a dress or so before-- some hand-me-downs she'd picked up from one place or another, but those had been abandoned when she'd been collected. Though when when Gwen had heard, the other woman had fixed what she'd viewed to be a dilemma. Medea had taken very thorough in showing her appreciation, and the very pleasant memories warmed her still. She'd never really thought much of dresses before, but certainly wearing and taking them off was a different sort of pleasure gained.

And who could have thought that her, the second of seven children, would suddenly be wearing something that cost more than all of her previous outfits cost together? It was certainly something. Medea had chosen one of the dresses she thought might pass the dress code more than others, though admittedly it had been some time since she'd read it, and even more time since she'd cared about it. When she'd been a Prefect, she'd been focused on behavioral issues, not the length of a girl's skirt.

Truthfully, she hadn't known who Oralie Slughorn was when she'd seen her name. Some younger girl, that was it, really. Had it not been for seeing the name speckled about, she would have had no idea how to find her, but she'd guessed the girl was rich, and probably pureblood. Therefore, Slytherin was the most likely candidate, and luckily, she had a brother there. She'd found Zachary, and asked him who she was, what she looked like. Her brother's Sign was quick and clear, and as Medea rather doubted that the younger girl had ever heard of her, it was best to show up in the mouth of the snake to take her to the dance. She might not have her magic, but she did have the air power that was making itself more and more known.

She'd waited at the stretch of wall for the Slughorn girl to leave her common room, and after a few false tries that she'd caught before she approached the Not-Oralie Students, she'd seen the right student. Gowned in black dress that Medea was fairly certain would have fed her siblings for a few months at the absolute least, she did look nice for a kid. She was a Sixth year, and even if Medea hadn't been so caught by the enchanting Gwendolyn, there were still three years between them. She'd introduced herself, offered her arm, and taken her up. There had been some efforts at starting small talk, because even though Medea didn't really care about much, she still thought she ought to practice more just in case Gwen wanted to take her somewhere.

Arriving at the Great Hall, she blinked a few times, uncertain suddenly. "I don't think I've ever seen so much pink in my life," she admitted. "Do you think the food will also have been dyed? Or the drinks at least, though I don't believe pink pumpkin juice sounds too appetizing, and pink milk sounds faintly unhealthy."

He'd been rather nervous about who he would be paired with. He didn't really think that he'd get someone awful, mostly because his mother and stepfather were close friends with the headmistress's brother, but really, you never knew. Not that there were awful people, really, just people he would be awful with, more accurately. Like Copeland, who he was fairly sure hated everyone. Or Sasha Augustine, who terrified him. Or Remy, who was sure to tear him apart. Or worse, Merlin forbid, his sister.

But no, no, he was all right, they were good. Lyla Graves was his partner for tonight-- or, he amended himself-- for the start of tonight. It was doubtful she'd spend much of the evening with him, at least. They were Quidditch captains, they were both Chasers, they were talented at what they did, and that was about it. They were in a few classes, they were both in Dueling club. They were in the same year, and he'd had enough casual conversation or heard enough of her in class to know she was certainly one of the brighter girls in their year.

He'd liked the whole idea of inter-house loyalty. Coming together, for better or worse, to help each other, and to have people reach out more. He'd heard there were others who weren't so happy about it, particularly the more anxious ones, but he'd tried to calm a few people down. This Headmistress wouldn't go ripping out tongues at her first ball. He was. . pretty sure about that, at least. Ninety-eight percent. There were the ghosts there this time, and half the adults were magicless.

Atha tilted his head, his grin light. "That depends. I know I drink mine unspiked, but it might make this go faster for you if we reach it after. Then again, the sooner we get there, the less of a chance there's going to be finger grime everywhere." He offered his arm. "Shall we?"

Karel rarely attended dances for the 'enjoyment' of it, he attended them in an attempt at making a few new partners and agreements. He'd contemplated coming to the Valentine dance with Oralie as his date, the witch had captured his attention and he was trying his best to court her and win her favour, but it was proving no easy feat. They slept together a lot and they often stole a few quiet moments together where they'd talk or express their fondness, but neither of them had openly admitted if there was something more there. Karel hated to admit it, but he was definitely falling for the witch; she made him a mess whenever he was near to her and it was something he was not used to. Miranda had never had quite the effect on him that Oralie had and as time passed by, he'd realised how things had ended up for them wasn't how a relationship should be.

When Karel had seen who he was paired with for the dance, a sense of awkwardness had washed over him. He'd been paired with his ex-girlfriend's former best friend. He and Luna had never really talked much and whenever they had it had been full of disinterest and passive aggressiveness. Karel didn't do friends, if he did he was very select in who he spent time with, he couldn't blur the lines between business, school and social. It was a risk if he got too comfortable with certain people. Oralie was the exception, he let her in on information related to his agreements and deals, but he knew that he could trust her and she frequently provided valuable input with things. It seemed to work for them, he helped her with Quidditch and she helped him with his business arrangements.

With Luna being a Slytherin, the wizard didn't have much of a distance to go and meet his date, so after he had got dressed, Karel stood at the bottom of the stairs to wait for her, he'd been caught up in his thoughts when he smelt 's perfume as she walked past and he looked up sharply, his eyes wide as he watched her retreat, from what he could see she looked as beautiful as always, but he couldn't really focus on it too much because @luna was soon by his side. Karel offered her a polite smile as he looked her over, "You look lovely, Luna." Karel told the brunette honestly and he offered her an arm. Karel had no doubt that the witch probably had someone else she wanted to be with at the dance, but he was a Prefect and he wanted to continue giving a good impression and if that included, escorting Luna to the dance and treating her like a proper lady then he would.

When the pair entered the great hall, Karel paused and scanned the room, it looked... nice, but far too pink. It was far too bright for him and he wished that the lighting could be dimmed just that little bit more, maybe then the pink would be a little less... fuschia. Karel wrinkled his nose in distaste before glancing at Luna to see how she felt about it all, "Can I get you a drink? Or maybe something to eat?" He offered, nodding to the buffet tables, he let his gaze wander over the Great Hall and he spotted Oralie stood with another girl. He recognised the girls face but he wasn't sure of her name. All he hoped was that at some point he'd be able to steal Oralie away, maybe when Luna disappeared to dance with whoever she really want to be with he could do the same. But for now, he had to treat his current date the way she deserved to be treated. Although maybe tonight would actually forge a new friendship between him and Luna, he wasn't sure though. Especially when they had to consider Miranda as someone mutual, but he didn't want to let her dictate his potential chances at friendship, Luna had a lot of admirable traits and if he was being honest, there could be much worse people to be paired with for the night.

Cupid's Got bad aim
Valentine's Day Ball 2019
Date: Medea stone

Oralie was never a fan of school dances. She attended because she had a responsibility to society. She would have a life of going places she didn’t want to be and smiling at people she didn’t like. It was part of being a Slughorn. She liked very few people, but showed grace and kindness to them all. Her opinions were her own, and she kept them closely guarded. Appearances mattered much.

She was not a witch forged of prejudice. She felt separate and apart from others, both by blood, heritage, and finances. Oralie had known only lavish luxury in all her days. Even in the Durant years, the Slughorns had been so rich and globally entangled, they had still be wealthy and well to do.

Her date for the evening was a girl that been taken in the registration. It was not her blood status that was a concern to Oralie—but the likelihood that the girl would be uncouth with no polish or sophistication. What did the Slughorn have to discuss all evening with plebeian?

Oralie was pleasantly surprised though, to be greeted at the entrance to the Slytherin Common Room by a witch in a fine gown. The color of it was dark, which was nice. It wasn’t black, but it wasn’t some loud, foul color that clashed horribly with the aura around the stranger. Oralie ascended the stairs with Medea, her arm linked with the other witch’s. The company was surprisingly genteel.

A ring of soft, feminine laughter came in response to the Ravenclaw’s reaction to the Great Hall.
“Circe will that it is not so,” she wished aloud, offering a smile to the other girl. “I could do without either of those things. But I’m sure there are a few around who have clearer, more appealing drinks, we might indulge in.” A bit of fire whiskey was all she expected to find in flasks tonight. Though she would much prefer champagne herself, a sip of alcohol could make the night more easily enjoyed by all.

“Do you dance, Medea?”
The Slughorn asked. She had not mentioned her internship or long standing relationship with graceful movements of her body. Ballet was a complicated thing for Oralie. She hated it and loved it all the same. Her mother was what tarnished it.

[attr="class","nuggetwords"]Lizzy was happy that she got to go to the dance with Carina, but she was absolutely furious that they weren’t allowed to have Henry with them. No, he had a different ‘date’ for the dance— and why did they have dates? They were too little. Anyway, they weren’t allowed to have the third part of their group go with them, technically, and Lizzy knew that Henry would follow the rules. Henry always followed the rules! Which was very nice and dandy, but it meant that they had another person joining their group for the evening...Not that she had anything against that. It was just that these were Lizzy’s friends, and since she had already lost her brother and her parents and Ah Ma and… She didn’t want them to leave her too. She didn’t think they would, but she hadn’t thought that the others would. It probably wasn’t the best thing to be jealous about, so she kept it squashed up nice and tight, and she would make sure to ask auntie about it later in her owl.

She had a lot of fun questions in the owl. One of them was involving one of the older students— Lizzy knew the last name because it was a Harpies last name, so she wanted to know… And Medium Jones wouldn’t tell her, and Little Jones wasn’t saying anything… But what were they supposed to do when a big Slytherin was stalking around the seventh floor and asking where the common room was? She had encountered it before, and it was making her nervous. She only knew the last name because Clio had gripped her fingers in a fist and whispered it menacingly. Lizzy had been petrified. She wasn’t too scared of Big Jones, but, really, it was only because Lorelai had said not to be scared. But she was actually scared this time.

Lizzy had told her friends about it, and she wasn’t sure what they thought. Well, she would know if she had listened. She had just gotten preoccupied with finding her own Quidditch nemesis, because that was something that showed you were cool, right? Grumbling, Lizzy tugged on Carina’s arm. She had distracted herself from the real problem again. “How long until we get to steal back Henry? Now? I know it’s only been a few minutes. But now?”

[attr="class","nuggetwords2"]Thank goodness he was supposed to go with Helenus, of all people. When he saw that it was an assigned date dance, Nick had been filled with a large amount of fear. He was the Head Boy, so he couldn’t avoid it. There was no way that he could skip it. But he had thought that he could have gotten someone worse. He could have wound up with one of the sixth year Gryffindors. If he wasn’t allowed to attend with Atha, the next best person was Arthur— who also was likely furious that he couldn’t be with Clio Jones. But Helenus wasn’t as crazy as the rest of the students. He was quiet, and sensible. Thank goodness. It didn’t mean that he was completely happy about all of this, though. He did hate that he was missing out on Valentine’s Day with Atha. This was his seventh year, after all. He really wanted to be able to do something with his boyfriend. But this was their new headmistress’s idea, so he would follow it.

He waited at the entrance to the Great Hall after seeing Atha in— with Graves, who was a nice choice. Neither of them were going to end up dreading the night, at least. He hadn’t really planned on enjoying himself, though. He had kind of assumed it would be horrible from the start. Nick pulled down on his shirt as he waited for Helenus, crinkling his nose. Things were supposed to be better now, right? This dance would be fine. Interhouse loyalty, talking to people, making friends… The most he knew of Helenus was that he was sensible and sweet. He had been at that stupid club thing Octavian had put on, and he had just… been there? Nick just didn’t think of him too often. Then again, he didn’t think of any of the sixth years too often.

He sighed. Okay, he could handle this. When the younger boy arrived, Nick smiled. He would be polite because he was relieved, and then they could go find Atha, right? “You look nice,” he said politely.

valentine's day ball
One two three and I'm on my feet
Got "Purple Rain" playin' on repeat
And I'm catchin' feels when you look at me
Assigned dates. Assigned. Dates. That even sounded horrible-- like, really, really terrible. Dima could only imagine how he would have felt about it last year or the year before, but this year he wasn't very happy about it. He had actually thought about skipping out on the dance entirely just to avoid whatever random date he'd end up with that wasn't @zoee but then it had become some mandatory thing. Oh, and it wasn't dates, they had said. It was about friendship. Inter-house unity. One collective school mass-- or something like that. All Dima knew was that if they'd have let him pick his own date he'd still have been promoting inter-house whatever.

The pairings were mandatory, but sticking within those pairings sure wasn't going to be. They couldn't force them to hang out with only their assigned partner, obviously, so he and Zoe had devised a plan. Fake Matchmaker was a'go. The plan? Simple. He just had to convince whatever partner he ended up with that her partner was totally and irrevocably in love with them and.... Well, that wasn't going to work out either. Not since he was paired off with none other than

Convincing him that Rhea was in love with him was totally pointless. Which was only a little sad. He had been looking forward to testing his sales pitch. But that was a small downfall to an even bigger gain. At least it should be easy enough to convince the seventh year to split off and find their respective dates. Especially since he had heard rumor that @clio was threatening fists of fury on whatever poor sap ended up stealing her date via these lame assignments. Getting hit by his rival Beater didn't sound like a fun way to start any sort of dance and he was more than happy to give up the prize if it meant he could go get his own.

Dima threw a glance across the room at Zoe. Getting out of the partnership ordeal should be pretty easy for him, he supposed, but how she was going to get out of her own was beyond him. Maybe he would have to swoop in and steal her like some overly dressed version of Tarzan or something. The corners of his lips drew into a smile as he winked at Zoe. He looked over toward Arthur and back at her giving a discreet nod. Oh yeahhhh, this should be easy peasy... Hopefully.

"Arthur," he greeted as he approached his assigned partner. Dima pursed his lips in a mostly forced smile. "I heard a rumor that Clio is going to beat me up unless I hand you over." He chuckled slightly, shoving his hands into his pockets. His blue eyes looked around them trying to find the Jones girl. Merlin, hopefully she wasn't behind him? "Look," he said with his best pre-practiced sales pitch voice. "I don't want to die, and you probably want to be with her? And I know we're supposed to mingle so--" Dima retracted his hand from his pocket and extended it for the boy to shake. "Consider us mingled?"
