Cupid's Got Bad Aim
She wasn’t here yet. Ever since he had arrived in the Great Hall, he hadn’t stopped searching the crowd. If not for this stupid matchmaking stuff, they could have met in advance and waste time. In all fairness, it wasn’t as bad as he had expected when he had first heard of this date nonsense the Headmistress had come up with. He wasn’t stuck with the giggly annoying mess he had pictured. @dima was okay. They had only just met, and they already agreed on the most important point of tonight: splitting up as soon as possible. “Yeah, sounds sound,” he said distractedly, not interrupting his search for @clio . “Definitely. We’re mingled enough. Have fun.” He gave the Ravenclaw a final nod, and the boy headed away to some girl. No, he recognized her; she was one of Clio’s classmates. He kept his eyes on them a moment longer, hoping where one Gryffindor was, another might materialize. But no. He did hope that she hadn’t ended up with a date that was so horrible that she had cursed them before even arriving. A professor might decide to lock her up in Gryffindor tower, and he couldn’t get in there.

At least he didn’t have to worry about . Marigold was harmless. He was not entirely sure how pairing two Hufflepuffs fit with all that house unity stuff the Headmistress pretended this farce served, but all the better. He had half feared she’d have to attend with a purist, who’d belittle her, taunt her, insult their mother or… Vi was still not in the best of places, and if anybody’d dare to hurt her — he’d tell Clio to beat them up? It was a weird way of protecting his sister he supposed; then again, Clio was definitely more experienced with beating up people than he was. Not that he wanted her to beat up anyone tonight. He’d be happy if he finally found her.

Just as he had decided to wait at the door, she appeared. With… was that ? Who he definitely had called a stupid cow a couple of times during the first two years at Hogwarts — not in her face, thankfully, and Nick and Atha had hopefully forgotten about it. He couldn’t exactly say that he remembered a lot of positive things about her, apart from that she was arrogant and annoying. But she was also a Muggleborn. She had been through hell last year, he shouldn't be this negative the first time he realized she was back. And he shouldn’t forget that in his fifth year, he had still been more or less a child, so it wasn’t like his judgement had been the soundest. But whether his former impression of Sasha had been fair or not wasn't something he wanted to think about tonight. He just wanted to be with Clio. So, getting rid of Sasha? Being inconsiderate towards a Muggleborn sounded like an atrocity. He’d have to be politer than he had originally intended and hope that the girl had someone else to go to. A pity Dima already had already gone to Zoe or whatever her name was. By this point he had reached the girls and the time for thinking things through was up. “Hi,” he said, trying not to just look at Clio. Sasha had been treated like nothing for too long for him to ignore her right away. “Dima’s left me for Zoe, so… do you want us to find you a date, Sasha?” That had been a bit too direct, hadn’t it? Why did Clio have to be paired with a Muggleborn? Did the Headmistress want him to feel guilty?

[attr="class","nuggettitle"]valentine's day dance
[attr="class","nuggetwords"]As soon as she saw who she was taking, it was all Clio could do to keep from groaning, audibly, in front of everybody in the common room. At least Octi had managed to keep her from doing so, making sure that she kept all of her irritation on the inside. She didn’t know why he felt like that was the right reason, anyway— it wasn’t fair. Sasha was a pain in the ass, even if her being gone made the common room a bit quieter. Well, fuck that. Clio thought she was bitchy, and annoying, and… Octi had soothed her, told her that everything would be fine. And then he tossed her glimmery nail polish at her, and he patted her on the head before heading to talk to Devin, who was wearing a suit— which was odd, really, in Clio’s opinion. She assumed Octi had helped. She wouldn’t really ask, since it wasn’t her business, not even when he came over to her, asking if she wouldn’t punch Sasha. She almost objected, but the flask was nice, and she shoved it into her dress pockets. “If she—” She managed to tear herself off of the curses she was about to say, shaking her head. “Fine, fine. I’ll play nice. If she’s more of a bitch than normal, though…”

On one hand, Clio could appreciate bitchiness. But Sasha’s brand was either amusing or horrifying. Who knew what it was going to be? Normally she snorted and admired it. It was nice to hear her running commentary on things now that she lived with her. When it was aimed at her, of course, Clio was furious. But she’d play nice. She knew where Devin was coming from. And how long would they even need to stay together, anyway? She was planning on ditching Sasha when she could so that she could be with Arthur. Honestly, her first Valentine’s Day date to the dance, and she had to go with someone she would barely call an acquaintance. Barely, because while she was funny and snarky, Clio thought that being mean for the case of being mean was really a shit thing to do.

She kept her tongue in check while they walked to the Great Hall together, and Clio wished she had smoked before going. It was annoying enough to have to deal with people, but now she was going to have to be in the same room as Satan Incarnate, and she was dealing with someone who didn’t want to be shackled to her. She wondered, idly, who Arthur had gotten paired with. She hoped it was someone easy to get rid of. Maybe he would have gotten lucky and gotten paired with Hels, but she doubted it. She almost wished it was with Aphrodite, though, so she had a reason to punch her. Not that Clio ever needed a reason, but…

Clio was torn from her thoughts by Sasha’s comments, and after a light snort, she arched a brow. “Aren’t you wearing pink?” she asked. Well, it was probably a stupid question. Maybe she meant hot pink? “What does it matter what other people are even wearing?” She warned herself to be nice, to make sure Sasha had a good time. But she wasn’t about to turn into a mean girl. In an attempt to ignore whatever comment Sasha made next, she craned her head to see if Arthur was already there. He found her first, though, and she smiled in relief when he appeared. “Hey,” she responded, relief obvious.

[break][break]
[attr="class","cbody"]The first dance back at Hogwarts would be assigned dates—that would be just her luck. Instead of finding someone that was actually interesting to spend a few hours with, she was stuck with a witch that thought fishnets and arguably the ugliest boots to ever disgrace Hogwarts’ floors were somehow appropriate for a ball. Sasha was certain that she couldn’t get away from her soon enough, but she also didn’t know just how closely they were keeping track of that sort of thing. Surely, they hadn’t gone to all of the trouble of pairing people off just to let everyone ditch their dates the second they walked in the door.
[break][break]
But maybe they had. Maybe they’d conveniently forgotten that every boy and girl in this school would be directed by their hormones to exactly who they wanted to get naked with for the night. Or, in the case of the younger students—oh, who was she kidding? She didn’t care enough about younger students to even consider why they would ditch their dates. Probably to avoid catching cooties or something like that.
[break][break]
If that was the case, and they truly weren’t going to care that everyone was ditching their assigned dates, then Sasha was sure that she could a few of her friends or some bloke that was remotely interesting. That was all that she could do, really. Smile, fake it, you are an Augustine. That had always been her family’s mantra, after all. Even after everything that had happened, that was still what was expected of her. In fact, it was probably even more important.
[break][break]
Luckily for her, it was something that she’d also been incredibly good at. Coming back to Hogwarts hadn’t been easy but faking it? That had been easy. Socializing was not a hard thing to do. Charming people wasn’t hard either, when she wanted to. But some people weren’t worth the effort to charm—not if she couldn’t get anything out of it, or if they were just generally boring.
[break][break]
@clio was more concerned with rivaling the vocabulary of a sailor and rolling around in the dirt, and that just wasn’t interesting. At the girl’s words, she raised her eyebrows, casting a perfected look of not-at-all legitimate concern at her. “Has anyone ever told you that you might be colorblind? You should probably go to the doctor.” Pink, honestly. Maybe her being colorblind explained her wardrobe choices for the evening. It would almost excuse it, nearly, but she really should get that checked out.
[break][break]
Sasha thought that her, or their, first order of business should be getting a drink and hoping to Merlin that someone had spiked it already. But before she could put thoughts to action, a nondescript, plain looking bloke was in their path. And talking to them. For a moment, she wondered if he was a transfer student or something, because she couldn’t for the likes of her determine if she’d ever actually seen him before. Surely, someone couldn’t have a face that was that unrecognizable, could they? She was so focused on her internal wondering that she almost missed probably the most laughable question that anyone had ever asked her. “The day I need your help to get a date will be the day I truly hit rock bottom. And I’ve been tortured… so, let that put things into perspective for you.” She shook her head and took another look around the room—and there was Mari. Much better. “Use protection, kids. Teenage pregnancy is so cliché.”
[break][break]
And with a saccharine smile, she was off, heading toward Mari on the other side of the room. She greeted her friend with a kiss on the cheek and offered her date a winning smile before tugging Mari off toward the drink table.

[break][break]
[attr="class","cbody"]Saoirse would never get used to having a job where she had to chaperone school dances. It was a situation that she never thought that she would be in. Her job had never before entailed… anything involving children, or students, or dances at all. It had always just been her traveling and learning more about magical creatures as she went—and then eventually, it had been her and Cas traveling. Being settled and living in one place was not something that she had ever expected of herself. It was not something that she had expected of either of them, honestly.
[break][break]
But here they were.
[break][break]
She didn’t mind teaching. She had been here for two years now, and she had gotten used to having a set schedule, of sorts. Being the Care of Magical Creatures professor meant that she only had a few courses a week to teach. A good majority of her time was more spent on taking care of Gryffindor House, in all honesty. That was never exactly an easy feat. They weren’t exactly a house known for following the rules, after all.
[break][break]
Still, she liked teaching here. She liked heading up Gryffindor House and now that Headmaster Flint was out of the school, Saoirse thought that she liked it even better. She had always gotten the feeling that he hadn’t been all that pleased to have a part veela on the staff. It was always the purists that tended to have problems with people that had that kind of mixed blood. She had found Headmistress Macmillan to be much more suited to the position. She had liked working with her for the past couple of months.
[break][break]
And she liked the idea that had been put together for this year. Every dance had been the same—different drama unfolding, of course, but no dance had ever had a twist like this put onto it. Saoirse thought that it was a good way of people getting out of their comfort zone for a little while. They hung around the same people day after day. This dance gave them an opportunity to spend some time with classmates that they might have been overlooking. It gave Muggleborns a chance to immerse themselves back in a school that they were still getting used to being back to. All in all, Saoirse thought that it was an incredibly good start to Isolde’s regime as headmistress to pull something like this together.
[break][break]
But kids were kids and she also knew that there was no way to make sure that they were actually staying together. She was curious whether or not they were meant to be enforcing these pairings. That could get a little bit messy—on one hand, they had made these pairings for a reason, and she thought everyone could put aside their own friendships for an hour and get to know someone new. But teenagers did tend to think that everything was so dramatic. Merlin forbid, they didn’t get to go with the person they wanted to. The announcement of the dance had been met with the sort of reactions she had been expecting. Honestly, they acted like they were handcuffing them to the person they’d been paired with.
[break][break]
She still thought that tonight was going to go well. Cas had been down at the cabin when she’d headed up here, but she figured he would show up eventually. She hoped that he would, anyway. Until then, she’d headed in Isolde’s direction, taking a sip of her punch as she went. “I suppose it was too much to hope for that these pairings would last longer than it took to walk in the door,” she said with a smile, shaking her head. “If you want me to wrangle pairs back together, just say the word.” Saoirse didn’t know if it was worth the effort, but she’d certainly give it a try.

ain't no Cinderella
I doubt she'd even let the devil
buy her little black book

This wasn’t the worst idea. Melanie had only been here a year, but she thought that in that time, there had been plenty that had happened, and plenty that they didn’t need to relive. There wasn’t a whole lot that could have gone worse but having the muggleborns back in the school where they belonged was good. They were just children, after all. And she knew that her name was Burke. She knew that she had two brothers that carried the mark on their arms. That her Uncle Clemson carried it. Her father had too. But Melanie had been so far removed from this world for so long, things like that didn’t bother her.

Blood status told her very little. It mattered very little, in the end. The world did not run on blood status. The world ran on three things. And only two of those were appropriate for the school. Though she was very aware of the levels of hormones that were coursing through this room right now. It was crazy to think that they were going try and police them all in here this evening, but Melanie didn’t think that anything was going to go wrong. They seemed to have already realized that they weren’t going to be forced to stay with their dates, and she watched as all of the colors seemed to swirl and change before her eyes.

She was so far past a headache right now that if she moved too fast, she was sure that she was going to vomit. Somehow this was even worse than normal dinners in the castle. At least there they were stationary, and they weren’t flitting this way and that to talk to their friends. There was more of a contained feel to that. This was just making her head spin, and she had a feeling that she would be asleep for long past breakfast in the morning to try and clear some of it away. It wouldn’t work, and she knew it, but she also knew that she wasn’t going to feel up to going back to Ffynone tomorrow either. The travel would just make her sicker.

No, she would deal with it here, and she would go and see if maybe Lady Greengrass had something for her head. She was tempted to ask Malfoy what he thought she might use to try and quell the headaches, but she didn’t see the man’s aura as she searched for it across the room. She wasn’t about to try and focus enough to see through the colors tonight. And she had gotten good enough at it that she could distinguish whom everyone was without looking too hard.

Melanie was keeping an eye out for . She knew her niece’s aura like the back of her hand. It was a beacon that easily drew her attention as the girl entered the hall, and she was glad to see that it was as bright and radiant as ever. She didn’t seem too bothered by whomever her date was. An aura that Melanie didn’t know as well, but one that she thought looked as though it could very well belong to her. The eagles were all hers, in their own way. She was the Head of Ravenclaw House, and she took that responsibility seriously. Most of her time spent here in the castle was spent tending to them.

Finding the familiar aura of out of the corner of her eye, Melanie headed in that direction and she smiled as she came up next to her friend. “This idea of Isolde’s may just work. At least they don’t seem to mind too terribly.” Looking over at the other witch she raised an eyebrow inquisitively, even if she wasn’t focused enough to read Amaryllis’s expression in return, “Where is Avalon this evening? I expected she’d be here, just for the entertainment value.” This seemed like the kind of thing that the elder witch would enjoy judging, even if being the guidance counselor meant that she wasn’t required to attend.

Cupid's Got Bad Aim
SO gather all the rebels now, We'll rebel-rouse and sing aloud

If there was one thing that Isabella Catherine Lopez loved it was a party. However, school dances where dates were assigned were not her jam. There was nothing fun about any school dances. The formal attire, lack of good music, and not nearly as much fun substances as there were in common room parties. What a bore. She was waiting for the after party she would make sure happened after this thing. She had been to the kitchens yesterday and made some brownies and cookies. She had a bunch of snacks prepared for later and she was just patiently waiting for later to come.

Bella sat with her legs up on one of the other chairs at the table. She slouched as he shoved another chip in her mouth. She had zero plans of actually participating at the dance. She wanted to go back to the common room already. She wanted to go back to the common room the moment she left it. Which was why she had thrown on the same dress she had worn to the end of the year ball last year and most dances since the fifth year. It still fits her and she looked great in it. What was the point in getting a new one? However, the sneakers paired with the dress, lack of makeup, and her natural curls let down had nothing to do with the zero participation thing. She just was not into all of that stuff.

A large yawn came from Bella. How much longer was this thing? She looked over at her date. "Copeland," Bella smiled at the boy, "Feel free to ditch me if you want. I'm just hungry and I'm sure you rather be with someone else." She lifted her arms up to stretch them out. "If we get caught for not being with each other just blame me." After letting the stretch of her arms finish she used a hand brush some crumbs off her dress.

[break][break]
[attr="class","cbody"]When it came to dances like this, sometimes she knew that it was necessary to create your own fun. With so much supervision, it was bound to be a little dull at first. But it always ended up getting more fun as the night went on. And then the parties afterwards were always interesting. If it was one thing that Gryffindor House was good at, it was parties. She was sure that tonight would be no exception. They just had to make it to the end of the dance before that would happen.
[break][break]
The staff’s attempts of matching people up to foster unity or whatever had been a bit of a joke from the start. It wasn’t as if her idea of a good time was spending any more time than she explicitly had to with her roommate. There wasn’t anyone that she particularly got along with that she shared a dorm with, in all honesty. With the exception of Mari, anyway. Clio was foul, Ollie was a bit of an odd one, and Zoe was a pureblood—and that was just the start. No, she found her friends elsewhere in the school. Hufflepuffs were particularly easy to manipulate. A nice word there, a compliment here, and they were eating out of the palm of her hand. She couldn’t say that she had any actual friendships in Hufflepuff, but there were more than a few people in that house that certainly thought they were friends.
[break][break]
She could be nice, when she wanted to be, after all. Or at least, she could put on a very good front, if that was what she was in the mood for.
[break][break]
Since she had already ditched her date for the night, and had already spent some time with Mari, Sasha decided it was time to set her sights elsewhere. She had tried not to pay all that much attention to who Devin’s date was for the night. In fact, she had tried to make a habit not to pay attention to him at all, actually, though he had been making that hard recently. He was the one that had said he wanted nothing to do with her, and she had just gone back to her old life. It was as simple as that. And this was her. This was who she was.
[break][break]
Sasha was sure that Devin was hoping to get lucky tonight and she thought that she might as well take that opportunity away from him. It would be amusing, anyway. She could just charm Devin right out of his date and the Hufflepuff he’d been paired with could spend time with her instead. Sasha liked to think that she was fun to be around.
[break][break]
And if it just so happened that she prevented Devin from finding someone to shag tonight, all the better. So, with a wink cast in Mari’s direction, she headed in Devin and the Hufflepuff’s direction. When she got there, her eyes flitted up the other Gryffindor for a fraction of a second. “Devin,” she said, dismissively, before her gaze moved to the Hufflepuff next to him. “Love the dress, M.” It wasn’t red or pink, so it was definitely better than some other people’s choices. And it wasn’t whatever Clio had been wearing—that was a monstrosity. “Blue suits you.” She added, before taking a sip of the ridiculous pink punch she’d picked up.

((OOC: Dominic Outfit))

The Valentine Day dance seemed to be a fascinating idea to Dominic, then again the 12-year-old found most ideas to be exciting. He was really looking forward to, not only spending time with the person that he had been assigned to but also hanging out with his friends Liz and Henry, as well as Carin. He might even see if he could bump into his cousins while he was about in the Great Hall. Dominic was very excited. Valentine day was his favourite holiday, as was Halloween, Christmas, St.David’s Day, his birthday, Easter, and every other holiday real and imagined.

The youngster had dressed relatively smart for the evening, not wanting to make a bad impression. He was in the second year, after all, Dominic was meant to be a bit more grown up now, even though he was still being very immature and somewhat childish at times. The Gryffindor enjoyed being childish, he found it fun. This school dance did seem like fun to him. He was looking forward to meeting new people, as well as spending time with his good friends. That is what this dance was meant to be all about of course. Personally, the blonde haired lad thought that this was a great idea.

This was why the little boy made an extra special effort this time, making sure that he dressed up as nicely as he could for this event. He felt that it was important to look smart for this. He even tried to seek the advice of his fellow dormmates, and to be fair to the other Gryffindor second-year boys, they did give him good advice. Perhaps Dominic was not as unpopular with his housemates as he thought that he was.

The Welsh lion club entered the Great Hall, he did not think too much of the decorations if he was honest with himself. All the hearts and roses seemed to be a bit too sissy for his liking, a bit too girlie. However, he guessed that he would just have to live with it. Still, he felt that it would have been nice to have something a bit more, of what he would consider, boyish.

He entered the Great Hall and saw that he was partnered with someone called @olya . He looked around for them, but he didn’t know who they were or exactly what they looked like. Instead, he wandered over towards @lizzy , and ”Hi” he said bouncing up and down a bit looking rather excitable, as per usual ”You guys okay? Are are are you up to to to much? What do do do you think of of of of the decorations? I I I think that they are a a a a bit girly myself….” he suddenly looked at Liz ”…no no no offence by the the way” he quickly said not wanting to get into trouble with his friend. ”But but but but I I I guess that that they are cool and and and suit the the the evening” he added with a small shrug and a sheepish little smile. He guessed that it was meant to be a Valentine’s Day dance after all.

CUPID'S GOT BAD AIM
VALENTINE'S DAY BALL 2019
For the longest time Nys had believed that @olivette and Dima had been some sort of couple. He had seen the two together quite often. And nearly every morning he had spotted them together. Meeting up in the common room, walking down to the Great Hall together, what have you. He had just assumed that it had been the case up until the Halloween Dance when the two had separate partners. Being a prefect he had a tendency to notice things like that. As he did his rounds he was often the first to notice when two students were spending more time that usual together. And of course he was always the background listener to whatever gossip was whispered about in the halls.

For the most part he wasn't one to engage in gossip, but he would admit that he did enjoy being a fly on the wall at times. The drama of Hogwarts was always quite exciting. Being a quiet thespian he had always had a flare for the dramatic, and so he used what he learned from observation to better his acting. Not that he had ever acted in front of anyone. Merlin, he'd likely die of embarrassment. Aside from the Drama Club at school not a soul really knew about his quiet love affair with theater and he much preferred to keep it that way. If he were to participate during a Club that was one thing, but were it a play or some other production he'd likely take his place back stage.

Such was his life, really. It was always better to fade into the background and that was what he did more often than not. It had been why, despite having the slightest crush on Vet, he hadn't really said a word. But tonight had the possibility to change that-- a small one, maybe, seeing as he was a bit deterred by the cliche of outing himself at the Valentine's Dance. Dionysus was more interested in getting to know her, and thanks to Headmistress MacMillan's pairings, he now had the chance.

"Thank you," Nys nodded humbly. "And, yes, dressing to impress you, of course! We've got to make a good impression for the sake of inter-house unity, despite the fact that we are in the same house." He smiled cheekily, bumping his arm gently against hers. It felt a little odd to be speaking so freely with someone outside of his regular group of friends, but in a good way he supposed. He had promised himself not to be the quiet fly on the wall he often was tonight. "Though I'm sure intra-house unity is equally important. No matter the case, I'm looking forward to getting to know you as more than just a pretty face-- familiar face," he corrected, feeling a light flush come across his cheeks.

Dionysus threw a look over to @fluffyhades secretly blaming him for the anxiety he was thrusting upon himself. Maybe they'd simply have to get through the night throwing glances like life preservers until the time called to make way up the stairs to the common rooms once again. Nys steeped quietly in his embarrassment for a moment, offering only a nod as she spoke of the house elves. He hadn't meant to compliment  her like that, though he had meant to compliment her. The white dress she had picked out for the evening seemed to flatter everything about her and he caught himself looking at her more frequently than anywhere else.

For a moment he had thought that she might have caught on to him, but he chuckled at her retort to his offer of admiring the decor. "I certainly do," he joked as his eyes wandered from her to the excessive and bright flowers. "It's starting to grow on me. I might have to snag a bit of it for the dormitory," he nodded, speaking in a faux air of matter-of-fact. The two started toward the refreshment table which, by the Gods, was equally bright and obnoxious. "What's your opinion on this whole pairing thing?" He inquired, trying to hide his prying. "I hope being paired with me hasn't infringed on other plans..."

((OOC: Amy's dress ))

Valentine Day was not Amy’s favourite day, she found it slightly forced lovey-doveyness. She did enjoy being loved. It was just the falseness of it all that the Welsh girl objected to, it seemed to be mandatory to love someone on a day like today and to shower that person with love and affection in the form of gives for that day. Surely, if you loved someone, you should show them love and affection every single day of the year? That was her opinion and the reason she did not like Valentine’s day. Well, that and the fact that she currently didn’t have a boyfriend. Her last one didn’t really work out, unfortunately. Still, she supposed if he wasn’t the one that there would be plenty more fish in the sea as it were.

The fifteen-year-old supposed that be free and single boys in the dance that she could try to go with if she so chooses. That being said, Amy also felt that she didn’t need any boy to make her feel complete. Amy often thought that boys were overrated in any case. It was just nice to have a boyfriend. Although the Hufflepuff always made sure that the boys she dated were suitably feminist for her liking.

There was also the aspect of having a partner randomly selected for her, she wondered who she would be paired with and what they would be like. The music-loving lass knew that it was not a date, well not in a traditional sense anyway, but it was meant to be a way to foster cross house friendships and alliances. The fifth-year already felt that this was something that she was used to, having family in other houses. Just because her brother was a Ravenclaw or her cousin a Gryffindor didn’t mean that she liked them any less. The Westwood siblings made sure that they spent as much time as they could with each other despite being in different houses. So, this kind of concept was old hat to her.

The young lady entered the Great Hall looked to see if her partner, @angus , was about before realising that she didn’t even know what he looked like. With a shrug she went over to get some something to drink, it would probably work itself out. Amy looked around to see if she could see her brother anywhere, but he was no-where to be seen. The young witch did notice Dominic talking to some of her friends. She decided to let them be.

Instead, the 15-year-old simply scanned the Great Hall observing people and looking for someone, anyone that she could join and find some company with until whoever she was paired with showed up anyway.
